Los dinosaurios han fascinado tanto a niños como adultos desde el descubrimiento de su existencia. Todos sus hábitos, sus características e incluso su apariencia son todavía un misterio, lo cual por supuesto hace que nos parezcan mucho más interesantes. Aquí tenemos una lista de todos los géneros de dinosaurios confirmados y no confirmados, así como algunos hechos fundamentales sobre los reptiles que predominaron en el planeta Tierra antes que los mamíferos.
Clasificación y terminología: Debido a que no hay manera de corroborar y clasificar a todas las familias de dinosaurios, no existe una taxonomía oficial para ellos. Sin embargo, la lista de géneros de dinosaurios creada y publicada por George Olshevsky, el experto en nomenclatura biológica, publicada en 1995 es la lista que hasta la fecha se consulta y se actualiza con frecuencia. La terminología se ajusta al Código Internacional de Nomenclatura Zoológica (conocido por sus siglas en inglés: ICZN), y la terminología principal se explica más abajo.

Se piensa que el titanosaurio Argentinosaurus huinculensis es el dinosaurio más grande (basado en evidencia no controvertida) y que podía medir de 29.87 metros a 39.62 metros de largo y podía pesar de 50 hasta 97 toneladas métricas.
Se piensa que el Compsognathus de alrededor de 91 centímetros de largo y con un peso de 2.5 kg fue el género de dinosaurio más pequeño y probablemente su tamaño fue un poco más grande que el tamaño de una gallina estándar.
Los dinosaurios saurópodos tenían el cuello más largo y su cuello fácilmente podía crecer hasta 15 metros de longitud, aproximadamente seis veces más largo que el cuello de una jirafa.
Los dinosaurios se extinguieron alrededor de hace 65 millones de años, cuando el periodo Cretácico terminó. Además, ellos habitaron la Tierra por alrededor de 165 millones de años antes de haberse extinto.
La extinción masiva al final del periodo Cretácico (Cretácico-Terciario o la extinción masiva del límite K-T), es uno de los acontecimientos catastróficos más grandes en la historia de la Tierra, y los científicos siguen debatiendo sus causas. Se cree que las causas más factibles de la eliminación de miles de especies de la faz de la Tierra, desde grandes reptiles marinos, pterosaurios y otros animales grandes hasta los dinosaurios fueron grandes erupciones volcánicas e impactos de asteroides.
Aunque pudiera parecer imposible, existen ciertas similitudes entre los reptiles prehistóricos y las aves de hoy en día, situación que ha llevado a los científicos a creer que las aves evolucionaron de los terópodos o de los dinosaurios de dos patas. Más adelante se descubrió evidencia que demostró la existencia de dinosaurios con plumas, lo cual consolidó está teoría aún más. Se piensa que un grupo de dinosaurios con plumas evolucionó para poder volar lo cual les ayudó a sobrevivir la gran extinción masiva del límite K-T.
En el 2016, los científicos encontraron un fragmento de una cola de dinosaurio con plumas, perfectamente preservada dentro de una pieza de ámbar de 99 millones de años. La cola, descubierta una vez que el ámbar había sido pulido para su uso en joyería, pertenece a un diminuto dinosaurio con plumas. Los expertos piensan que ésta es una buena oportunidad para averiguar cuál fue la apariencia de estos reptiles debido a que ésta es la primera ocasión en que se ha encontrado algo distinto además de huesos fosilizados.
